What "Restored to Safety" Means for Vintage Lighting

"Restored" gets used loosely, so it's worth saying plainly what restored vintage lighting means here. A vintage fixture restored to safety looks like its old self and wires like a new one. The old metal, shade, and finish stay. The electrical guts don't.

The gap you can't see

That gap matters more than it sounds. The cloth-insulated wire inside an eighty-year-old fixture was fine in 1940. Now it's a hazard. The insulation dries out, cracks, and flakes off the conductor, so a fixture that looks flawless from the floor can be unsafe behind the canopy. The old sockets wear out. Grounding, where it exists at all, often wouldn't pass anything a modern inspector would sign. None of that shows from across the room.

Restoration swaps out what fails and keeps what makes the piece worth having: new wire rated for present-day use, sound sockets, real grounding where the fixture allows it. The shade, the body, the finish, the lines you fell for all stay untouched. We're not going to walk you through doing this yourself, and it isn't gatekeeping. Line voltage is unforgiving, the failure modes hide where you can't see them, and a fixture that's wrong behind the canopy passes every visual check right up until the day it doesn't. What we can honestly offer is a fixture that's already right, tested, wired, ready to hang, instead of a set of steps and a good-luck.

Salvager's Note: When a listing says "restored," ask what was actually done to the wiring. Honest restoration means new wire, sound sockets, and grounding where possible, all invisible from the floor. If a seller can't say, treat "restored" as decoration, not a promise.

Find Your Part

Search the catalog by part, fitter size, or fixture type — try “2 1/4 shade”, “mogul socket”, or “sash lock”.

The Vintporium Heritage Standard

The Heritage Standard

Restored by hand, one at a time. Old wire out. New wire rated for present use, sound sockets, and grounding where the fixture allows. The body, glass, finish, and the marks it earned stay. Every fixture is tested on the bench before it leaves the shop.

Can't Find the Part?

Looking for a matching sconce, a replacement shade, or an odd-sized fitter? Send us a photo and measurements. A large portion of our inventory is uncataloged. Many of the doors, windows, fireplace surrounds, bath fixtures, and architectural pieces in the yard never make it to the website. If you don't see it online, that doesn't mean we don't have it.

About the Salvager

Joe Golda has run Vintporium from his workshop in San José since 2008. He sources the pieces, pulls the old wiring, rewires them, finishes them by hand, and packs them himself. One person, one bench, one standard. Every fixture is tested — each socket, each switch — before it ships. What's original is called original. What's new is called new. We call this commitment to candor and craft our Heritage Standard.
