Inside the Shop: Where the Work Happens

People sometimes picture a big showroom with aisles. The Vintporium workshop isn't that. It's a workspace, and most of what happens here happens at a bench, not on a sales floor.

The shop is set up around the work. There's the bench where I do the restoring, rewiring, and finishing, tools within reach and a fixture usually clamped or laid out mid-job. There's the inventory, carefully kept, shelves and racks of fixtures, shades, sockets, and hardware, sorted so I can find the part someone needs. And there's the packing area, because getting a piece to you whole is its own part of the job. That's why it's appointment-only, and why I've explained that elsewhere. When you're one person and the day is mostly bench work, you can't also be standing by a door. Most of what you'd see if you came by is a job in progress: a fixture apart on the bench, its old wiring pulled, waiting for new; a shade being matched to a body; a finish being brought along by hand. It's not glamorous, and it's not meant to be. Where a thing is made tells you something about it. A piece from Vintporium came out of a one-person workshop where somebody did every step by hand and stood over it start to finish, which is different from a fixture that passed through a warehouse.

Find Your Part

Search the catalog by part, fitter size, or fixture type — try “2 1/4 shade”, “mogul socket”, or “sash lock”.

The Vintporium Heritage Standard

The Heritage Standard

Restored by hand, one at a time. Old wire out. New wire rated for present use, sound sockets, and grounding where the fixture allows. The body, glass, finish, and the marks it earned stay. Every fixture is tested on the bench before it leaves the shop.

Can't Find the Part?

Looking for a matching sconce, a replacement shade, or an odd-sized fitter? Send us a photo and measurements. A large portion of our inventory is uncataloged. Many of the doors, windows, fireplace surrounds, bath fixtures, and architectural pieces in the yard never make it to the website. If you don't see it online, that doesn't mean we don't have it.

About the Salvager

Joe Golda has run Vintporium from his workshop in San José since 2008. He sources the pieces, pulls the old wiring, rewires them, finishes them by hand, and packs them himself. One person, one bench, one standard. Every fixture is tested — each socket, each switch — before it ships. What's original is called original. What's new is called new. We call this commitment to candor and craft our Heritage Standard.
