Why Every Generation Rediscovers the Last One's Trash

Taste runs in cycles.

Every generation tears out something the next generation wants back.

You can see it in almost any old house. Victorian millwork was removed by owners who wanted cleaner, more modern interiors. Years later, homeowners began searching for the same carved details they had once discarded. Mid-century lighting followed a similar path. First it was current. Then it was dated. Now it is collected.

A salvage yard is where you watch the process happen.

Victorian hardware, stained glass, cast-iron sinks, brass sconces, and carved mantels often arrive for the same reason. Someone decided they no longer fit the house they wanted. Given enough time, those same pieces become difficult to find.

Nothing looks worse than the recent past or better than the distant one.

A style has to become history before most people can see it clearly. As long as it feels recent, it feels ordinary. Once enough time passes, people begin to notice the materials, the details, and the quality that were always there.

That long pause is where salvage yards come in.

Pieces can sit for years before demand catches up with them again. A brass chandelier nobody wanted in 1995 may be the exact fixture someone is searching for today. A salvage yard is where things wait the gap out.

You don't have to predict the next trend. Few people do.

Buy what belongs in the room. Buy what suits the house.

The pieces that last are rarely the ones chosen because they were fashionable. They're the ones chosen because they were right.

Find Your Part

Search the catalog by part, fitter size, or fixture type — try “2 1/4 shade”, “mogul socket”, or “sash lock”.

The Vintporium Heritage Standard

The Heritage Standard

Restored by hand, one at a time. Old wire out. New wire rated for present use, sound sockets, and grounding where the fixture allows. The body, glass, finish, and the marks it earned stay. Every fixture is tested on the bench before it leaves the shop.

Can't Find the Part?

Looking for a matching sconce, a replacement shade, or an odd-sized fitter? Send us a photo and measurements. A large portion of our inventory is uncataloged. Many of the doors, windows, fireplace surrounds, bath fixtures, and architectural pieces in the yard never make it to the website. If you don't see it online, that doesn't mean we don't have it.

About the Salvager

Joe Golda has run Vintporium from his workshop in San José since 2008. He sources the pieces, pulls the old wiring, rewires them, finishes them by hand, and packs them himself. One person, one bench, one standard. Every fixture is tested — each socket, each switch — before it ships. What's original is called original. What's new is called new. We call this commitment to candor and craft our Heritage Standard.
