The Internet Salvage Dealer and the Local Yard

Salvage used to be bound by geography, and online architectural salvage cut that tie. The local yard, where you drove, walked the aisles, and took what happened to be there, has given way to a national trade where a part pulled anywhere can reach a buyer everywhere. The shift changed the trade deeply, mostly for the better, with one real loss worth naming.

The gains run to the specialist

The gain runs toward the specialist and the buyer with a precise need. When salvage was local, your options were whatever your region's yards held; online, the pool becomes everything a dealer anywhere has thought to list, so the exact part becomes findable across the whole country instead of the nearest county. It also changed who can run a salvage business. A one-person specialist with deep, narrow knowledge no longer needs a large local walk-in trade; they can serve the handful of people nationwide who need exactly what they know and stock. The loss is the wandering. Walking a physical yard, you found things you weren't looking for; a search box gives you what you search for and can't surprise you. Good listings, honest photos, and a dealer who answers questions recover most of that, but not the serendipity of the aisle. On balance the trade is better for the shift, especially for anyone with a specific part to find.

Find Your Part

Search the catalog by part, fitter size, or fixture type — try “2 1/4 shade”, “mogul socket”, or “sash lock”.

The Vintporium Heritage Standard

The Heritage Standard

Restored by hand, one at a time. Old wire out. New wire rated for present use, sound sockets, and grounding where the fixture allows. The body, glass, finish, and the marks it earned stay. Every fixture is tested on the bench before it leaves the shop.

Can't Find the Part?

Looking for a matching sconce, a replacement shade, or an odd-sized fitter? Send us a photo and measurements. A large portion of our inventory is uncataloged. Many of the doors, windows, fireplace surrounds, bath fixtures, and architectural pieces in the yard never make it to the website. If you don't see it online, that doesn't mean we don't have it.

About the Salvager

Joe Golda has run Vintporium from his workshop in San José since 2008. He sources the pieces, pulls the old wiring, rewires them, finishes them by hand, and packs them himself. One person, one bench, one standard. Every fixture is tested — each socket, each switch — before it ships. What's original is called original. What's new is called new. We call this commitment to candor and craft our Heritage Standard.
