Reproduction Hardware Done Right: Same Materials, New Cut

Sometimes the original part doesn't exist in the numbers you need, and good reproduction hardware is the honest answer. There's a real difference between reproduction done right, made in the same materials to the same pattern, and a cheap fake that copies the look and nothing else.

When to reach for it

The case for reproduction is usually about matching quantity. A house needs a run of identical hinges, a full set of matching cabinet pulls, a consistent door-hardware suite, and the originals may survive in ones and twos, not in the number the job requires. A faithful reproduction, cast in solid brass or bronze to the correct pattern, lets you complete the set without spending years chasing singles or settling for a mismatch. Materials separate honest reproduction from junk. A good reproduction is solid metal, the same substance the original used, cut or cast to the same design, and it will age the same way. A cheap fake is pot metal or thin plating over zinc, made to look right in the package and wear badly in a year. Honesty is the rule that makes it legitimate: sold plainly as a faithful reproduction in the right materials, it deceives no one and does exactly the work an original would.

Salvager's Note: Buying a reproduction? Confirm it's solid brass or bronze, not pot metal or plated zinc. Solid reproductions age like the originals they copy; pot-metal fakes look right in the box and fail within a year.

Find Your Part

Search the catalog by part, fitter size, or fixture type — try “2 1/4 shade”, “mogul socket”, or “sash lock”.

The Vintporium Heritage Standard

The Heritage Standard

Restored by hand, one at a time. Old wire out. New wire rated for present use, sound sockets, and grounding where the fixture allows. The body, glass, finish, and the marks it earned stay. Every fixture is tested on the bench before it leaves the shop.

Can't Find the Part?

Looking for a matching sconce, a replacement shade, or an odd-sized fitter? Send us a photo and measurements. A large portion of our inventory is uncataloged. Many of the doors, windows, fireplace surrounds, bath fixtures, and architectural pieces in the yard never make it to the website. If you don't see it online, that doesn't mean we don't have it.

About the Salvager

Joe Golda has run Vintporium from his workshop in San José since 2008. He sources the pieces, pulls the old wiring, rewires them, finishes them by hand, and packs them himself. One person, one bench, one standard. Every fixture is tested — each socket, each switch — before it ships. What's original is called original. What's new is called new. We call this commitment to candor and craft our Heritage Standard.
